Bayside Anchor Featured by WCSH 6, Keith Carson’s ‘Weather Whys’

PORTLAND, Maine – Bayside Anchor, one of the city’s newest multifamily housing communities, is generating a lot of buzz. Co-developed by Portland Housing Authority and Avesta Housing with design by Kaplan Thompson Architects and Wright-Ryan serving as the Construction Manager, the project is a mixed-income, mixed-use community featuring 45 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments, as well as Head Start and Community Policing services. “Bayside Anchor is designed for people of all income levels. Income limits apply on some apartments and are based on household size,” Avesta Housing shares on the project’s web page.

Bayside Anchor most recently attracted the attention of meteorologist Keith Carson with WCSH 6. Carson highlighted the benefits of the project’s Passive House design and construction in Maine’s harsh climate during his ‘Weather Whys’ feature.

Jesse Thompson, Principal at Kaplan Thompson Architects, and Alyssa Parker, Director of Commercial Project Management at Wright-Ryan Construction, were interviewed for the story. The project partners shared exciting details about projected operating cost savings for the building made possible through the application of the Passive House concept.

Carson closed the segment mentioning Maine’s two current, large-scale multi-family Passive House projects. One is Bayside Anchor, the other is Village Centre Apartments in Brewer which added 48 new units of workforce housing to the greater Bangor area when it opened its doors in April. Wright-Ryan served as the Construction Manager on both projects.

Community Housing of Maine developed and owns Village Centre, which was design by CWS Architects with sustainability consulting by Thornton Tomasetti. The project received its final certification from the Passive House Institute U.S. (PHIUS) in September, making it the largest PHIUS-certified project in New England. The Project also received the Best Multifamily and Best Affordable Housing Project Awards at the North American Passive House Conference earlier this year.
