Wright-Ryan was selected as Construction Manager out of seven candidates to perform construction for the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center at the University of Maine, Augusta campus. The building design was initiated as an international design competition by the non-profit organization Holocaust and Human Rights Center and received more than 120 entries from around the world. The building includes high-tech classrooms, exhibit space and a curved atrium space serving as a passive solar collector. Boston-based architects Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott were selected for their design which incorporated the metaphor of a flower and unique and unusual materials, such as copper shingles. "Their design was so innovative with the petals of light that we fell in love with it," said Sharon Nichols, executive director of the HHRC of Maine. The construction of the “petals” and the associated curtain wall proved to be challenging. Therefore, Wright-Ryan Millwork built mock-ups of the petals to ensure proper construction.
