CONSTRUCTION BEGINS AT GREATER
 PORTLAND YMCA

(PORTLAND) –The Greater Portland branch of the YMCA is adding 32 single room occupancy units along with a new, welcoming entryway and improved drop off/pick up points along the High Street elevation of their current facilities.  The addition, designed by Portland-based firm, CWS Architects incorporates materials and designs that are familiar in the surrounding neighborhood such as the brick veneer to match the existing building.

In order to make room for the new construction, demolition of two existing apartment buildings needed to happen.  The buildings were flattened under the supervision of one of the States largest construction firms, Wright-Ryan Construction.  In addition to overseeing the construction that will happen on High Street over the next eight months, Wright-Ryan previously partnered with the Greater Portland YMCA branch to complete projects including renovations to the pool, aerobic exercise room and the executive men’s locker room in 1999, the child care center in 2002 and the teen center in 2003.

Wright-Ryan is no stranger to managing jobsites on busy Portland arterial roadways.  They recently built the new 4-story Casco Terrace Apartments above a parking garage on State Street, completed reconstruction of the Preble Street Resource Center and performed renovations at the Children’s Museum of Maine in 1993.  Currently, Wright-Ryan is completing a 30-unit, single room occupancy structure in Portland for Avesta Housing.

In 2004, the Cumberland County YMCA celebrated their 150th year anniversary and one year later they find themselves celebrating a whole new chapter in their history.  The additions to their Portland facilities will help bring the YMCA closer to achieving their goal of strengthening the community by allowing them improved  space and logistics for serving families and individuals.
