YOUTH ALTERNATIVES REDEVELOPS CENTURY OLD BARN
(SOUTH PORTLAND) - Youth Alternatives, of Portland, will move their
main office to the expanded facilities at the Brickhill campus in
South Portland. The non-profit organization is committed to helping
children and families at many levels in regards to abuse, neglect,
mental illness, homelessness, substance abuse and the like. Services,
provided since 1972, include prevention counseling, intervention,
safe haven homes and education.
Wright-Ryan Construction will manage the expansion, which will require
restoring a barn, more than 100 years old, and adding more than 16,000
square feet to the facility. The barn was designed by nationally
recognized local architect John Calvin Stevens and was used as part
of the work farm for boys at the site of the state's first reform
school. The increase in space will allow Youth Alternatives to serve
25 percent more families.
Most recently, Portland Urologic Associates relocated their medical
offices to the "castle" on Brickhill. In addition to office
space, the former Youth Center campus for troubled boys now offers
66 new townhouse units. Currently, five existing brick cottages on
the campus are being renovated into 43 mixed-market rate apartments
for the Maine State Housing Authority. Once complete, the campus
will be transformed from an abandoned set of buildings into more
than 300 housing units and commercial space. The project was developed
by Richard Berman of Portland and designed by Winton Scott Architects,
also of Portland. Wright-Ryan Construction is managing all construction
at Brickhill.
