USGBC Tours Two Wright-Ryan Projects
(Portland)- The Maine chapter of the US Green Building Council hosted
an invitation only tour for Maine public figures and industry leaders.
The tour included three homes that incorporate sustainable design
and building techniques.
The first home, designed by Chris Briley with TFH Architects, was
toured by more than twenty individuals. The home's prototype - Opus
I has been featured in Fine Homebuilding and Portland Magazine. Opus
II is currently awaiting LEED for Homes certification, a new program
instituted by the US Green Building Council.
The second home on the tour was designed by Richard Renner Architects
of Portland. The home is currently under construction by Wright-Ryan
Construction and is expected to be complete in September. The Cranberry
Ridge project, located near Wolfs Neck State Park in Freeport, incorporated
advanced framing techniques that minimized the use of lumber and
features a solar system to heat the home's water and to generate
electricity. The home is presently for sale and will also be considered
for the LEED for Homes certification.
The final stop on the tour was a private residence in South Freeport
which was built in 2002. The home was designed by Winton Scott Architects
with the goal of minimizing the overall footprint. The Ridge House
won the Maine AIA Design Award in 2003, was featured in Portland
Magazine in May 2005, televised on New England Dream House in August
2005 and written about in the Boston Globe in 2006.
