3S Artspace, by Wright-Ryan

Wright-Ryan worked collaboratively with project partners through an integrated design project delivery to complete 3S Artspace. The adaptive reuse project transformed an existing, derelict concrete building located a half mile from the center of downtown Portsmouth, NH into a nonprofit venue that combines the only midsize, flexible performance space of its kind in the area, with a non-commercial art gallery, and a locally sourced restaurant. The performance space has standing-room capacity for 425 people and a modular stage that expands for larger performances, contracts for smaller acts, or can be removed entirely to open up the floor area. The 2,240-square-foot gallery has 25-foot ceilings, and the 2,610-square-foot restaurant offers ample seating. Distinctive weathering steel panel cladding was also added to the building’s exterior. 3S Artspace was the recipient of an AIA New Hampshire Honorable Mention Award.
