great diamond island, ME

spectre house

Architect: Jessie Carroll Architect

Perched on a rugged cliffside on a small island off the coast of Maine, this bold retreat became another island project feather in our cap.

The client had a unique vision: a secluded hideaway that felt like it belonged in a James Bond film—raw, powerful, and unforgettable. He wanted a space that embraced nature, celebrated bold materials, and pushed the boundaries of traditional design.

Building on an island comes with its own set of challenges, from limited access to working with the rocky terrain. But those constraints shaped something special. From the outside, the home appears modest—low in profile and tucked carefully into the cliff. But step inside, and it opens up into soaring, dramatic spaces that frame breathtaking views of the open ocean and surrounding islands.

The interiors are intentionally minimal, allowing the landscape to take the spotlight. Fireplaces, scaled with grandeur, anchor the rooms and add a sense of warmth and drama.

What emerged is more than just a house—it’s a remote sanctuary, a place for our British client and his Maine-based family to escape, recharge, and feel connected to both nature and each other.
