About
Wright-Ryan provided design/build services in partnership with Lavallee Brensinger Architects for the full renovation of Hetzel Hall, a 1920s-era dormitory on the University of New Hampshire’s Durham campus. The project involved a complete interior reconfiguration to better serve today’s students, replacing outdated layouts with 139 beds in modern configurations, including single rooms and double mini-suites with shared bathrooms. The renovation also introduced gender-neutral, single-use bathrooms and significantly expanded communal gathering and study spaces. Accessibility was improved with the addition of an elevator and ADA-compliant units, while exterior site improvements enhanced both the historic patio and surrounding outdoor areas.
Sustainability
Our team transformed the dormitory into a highly energy-efficient building. We replaced all outdated systems with entirely new MEP systems designed for performance and efficiency. To improve the building envelope, Wright-Ryan utilized AeroBarrier technology, sealing microscopic gaps by placing the building under positive pressure. Blower door tests conducted throughout construction demonstrated significant improvements in airtightness.
Historic
Wright-Ryan completed a full renovation of this historic residence hall, preserving the original brick exterior while modernizing all interior spaces. The project upgraded building systems, improved accessibility, and reimagined shared areas, all while maintaining the architectural character of one of UNH’s oldest campus buildings.
