Wright-Ryan renovated five existing brick cottages, at the site of the former Maine Youth Center, into 43 affordable apartment units. The buildings had been abandoned for more than three years, but with some thought and creativity, they became an excellent opportunity for redevelopment. The project has received acclaim for its responsiveness to the needs of the community. Wright-Ryan used the large site as a chance to implement an aggressive waste management plan. During the twelve-month construction schedule, more than 1,003 tons of waste was diverted from landfills. The project was the first to employ MaineHousing’s green standards.
